The school is named after a Scottish settlement in western Cumberland County, Seventy-First Township. The Scots used this name in honor of a failed bid for Scottish independence on the part of their forebears in the 71st Regiment of the Scottish Highlanders.
The original schoolhouse is on the grounds of Seventy-First Classical Middle School, across 71st School Road, southwest of the current site.
